Strawberry Trees
The strawberry tree is scientifically known as Arbutus unedo. It's an evergreen shrub or small tree that belongs to the family Ericaceae.
The tree can grow up to 5-10 meters tall. Its bark is reddish-brown and peels off in thin flakes. The leaves are dark green and glossy, while the flowers are small, white or pinkish, and bell-shaped.
The strawberry tree produces round, red fruits that resemble strawberries, hence its name. However, the fruits are not related to true strawberries. They are edible but have a gritty texture and a sweet-tart flavor.
Native to the Mediterranean region and Western Europe, the strawberry tree thrives in well-drained soils and prefers sunny locations. It's commonly found in coastal areas, woodlands, and rocky slopes.
With its notable resilience to both drought and fire, the strawberry tree is an essential species in wildfire-prone areas.
